NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's
ice hockey team overcame a 2-0 second period deficit and scored
four goals in the third period to defeat visiting Babson, 5-2, in
an ECAC East contest Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
Chad Anderson scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead
Norwich (7-4-2, 5-2-1 ECAC East). Tyler Stitt, Eric Tallent, Nikita
Kashirsky and Rico Piatelli also added goals for the Cadets, who
trailed 2-1 midway through the third period before exploding for
four goals in the final 9:35 of the third.
Tallent scored the game-tying goal on a slap shot from the right
point at the 9:35 mark of the third period. Anderson and D.J.
Fimiani were credited with assists on the goal, Tallent's second of
the year. The Cadets took their first lead of the game when
Kashirsky scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the
13:44 mark. The senior forward came in all alone on Babson
goaltender Andrew Peabody, made a move and then slid it into the
goal to send the Kreitzberg crowd into a frenzy. Anderson and
Fimiani assisted the goal, which was Kashirsky's fifth of the year.
Piatelli redirected a long shot from Greg Eskedjian at the 15:44
mark to provide an insurance tally. Eskedjian and Steve Coon picked
up assists on the goal, which was Piatelli's fourth of the season.
Anderson capped the scoring at the 18:05 mark, potting an
unassisted empty net goal. It marked Anderson's sixth goal of the
campaign.
The game started out slowly, with neither team able to score in
the first period. Norwich outshot Babson 12-9 in the frame, and
both teams enjoyed solid scoring chances.
Babson (4-7-1, 3-5-0 ECAC East) opened the scoring just 1:11
into the second stanza as Pat McLaughlin scored his first goal of
the season. Jason Schnieder and Shane Farrell set up the goal, and
were credited with assists on the play. The Beavers made it 2-0
less than five minutes later when Chris Sabo scored at the 5:09
mark. Terry Woods and Chris Wood were credited with assists on the
play.
Norwich got on the scoreboard at the 12:22 mark of the second
period when Stitt fired a slap shot from the left point and beat
Peabody for a power play goal. Fimiani and Anderson earned assists
on the goal, which was Stitt's second of the season.
Norwich goaltender Ryan Klingensmith was solid between the
pipes, making 23 saves in the win. Peabody finished the night with
24 stops.
The Cadets outshot the Beavers, 29-25. Norwich went 1-for-4 on
the power play, while Babson went 0-for-3.
Norwich will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when the
Cadets host ECAC East rival UMass-Boston at Kreitzberg Arena.
