NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Marie Girard scored a
career-high 16 points, and Kayleigh Shappy and Ally Daniels each
netted 12 points apiece to lead the Norwich University women's
basketball team to a 96-26 thumping of GNAC foe St. Joseph (Conn.)
Tuesday evening at Andrews Hall.
Laurel McWilliams chipped in 10 points for the Cadets, who shot
a blistering 60.6 percent from the field for the game. All 12
Norwich players scored in the contest, which was never in doubt.
Norwich (9-4, 2-0 GNAC) came out of the gates on fire,
outscoring St. Joseph (Conn.), 20-4, to start the game. The Blue
Jays scored the next five points to make it 20-9 at the 12:37 mark,
but the Cadets ended the first half on a 29-7 run to take a 49-16
lead into halftime.
Norwich shot a red-hot 59.5 percent from the field in the
opening 20 minutes, while St. Joseph (Conn.) hit only 17.9 percent
of its first half shots.
Norwich scored the first 12 points of the second half to open up
a 67-16 lead at the 12:10 mark. The Cadets outscored the Blue Jays,
47-10, in the second stanza as they cruised to the easy win.
The Cadets shot 61.8 percent from the floor in the second half,
while the Blue Jays made only 17.2 percent of their attempts in the
period.
Norwich had 35 assists on its 43 field goals. The Cadets were on
fire from three-point range as well, knocking down 8-of-18 attempts
(44.4 percent) from downtown.
St. Joseph (Conn.) (2-11, 0-2 GNAC) was led by Ilaria Schiano,
who scored a team-high nine points. Gina Morales chipped in eight
points for the Blue Jays.
Norwich resumes its 2008-09 GNAC schedule on Saturday, Jan. 17,
when the Cadets travel to New Haven, Conn., to take on Albertus
Magnus at 1 p.m.
