NEWPORT, R.I. - Molly Golden scored a pair of
goals, and Rebecca Simmons made 30 saves as the Salve Regina
University women's ice hockey team knocked off Norwich University,
3-1, in ECAC East action Sunday night at St. George's Rink.
Kathleen Roche added a goal and an assist for the Seahawks, who
improve to 9-4-0 (7-4-0 ECAC East) with the win. Whitney Brown
scored the lone goal for the Cadets, who dropped their second
contest in two days to fall to 5-7-0 (4-5-0 ECAC East).
With the game tied at one in the second period and the Seahawks
on the power play, Roche fired a wrister from the left circle that
beat Norwich goaltender Cindy Fortin high to the glove side at
13:54. The goal was Roche's third on the season and was assisted by
Gabrielle Gardner.
Golden's second goal of the night at 11:35 of the third period
gave the Seahawks a two-goal cushion at 3-1, and Simmons did the
rest, making 15 saves in the third period to preserve the lead.
Golden opened the scoring at 5:43 of the first when she
converted a pass from Jen Thiesing into her fourth goal of the
season. Brown's unassisted goal at 11:15 of the first tied the game
at one.
The Seahawks finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play, while
Norwich failed to score on all six of its opportunities. Fortin
finished the evening with 19 saves for the Cadets.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, Jan. 16, when the Cadets
travel to Plymouth, N.H., to take on Plymouth State at 6 p.m.
