Football: Norwich Defeats St. Lawrence, 27-7

Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. - Senior running back Darnell Jackson carried the ball 25 times for 209 yards and three touchdowns as the Norwich University football team defeated St. Lawrence, 27-7, at Leckonby Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It marks the first time since 2004 that Norwich has opened a season with consecutive victories. The Cadets (2-0) have already matched their win total from last year, when they finished 2-8.

Norwich got on the board at the 13:11 mark of the first quarter when junior DB Donovan Brown scooped up a St. Lawrence fumble and raced 20 yards for a touchdown. The Cadets missed the extra point, and they settled for a 6-0 lead.

Norwich added to its lead early in the second quarter when Jackson scored on a six-yard touchdown run. Junior QB Chris Gilding hooked up with freshman WR Ryan Jacobs for the two-point conversion to push NU's lead to 14-0 at the 14:33 mark.

Neither team was able to score over the final 14 minutes of the second stanza, and the Cadets took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

After holding St. Lawrence on its first possession of the second half, Norwich took the ball and marched down the field for another touchdown. Jackson capped the drive when he broke off a 56-yard touchdown run. NU's extra point attempt was blocked, and the Cadets settled for a 20-0 lead with 11:41 to play in the third quarter.

St. Lawrence (0-2) scored its first points of the day later in the third quarter as Eric Jones capped a 61-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good, and the Saints trimmed Norwich's lead to 20-7 at the 4:11 mark.

Jackson capped the scoring with 3:28 to play in the fourth quarter as he eluded several tacklers and scampered 26 yards for his third touchdown of the game.

One week after forcing seven turnovers at Mount Ida, the NU defense had four takeaways this afternoon. Senior LB Jim Kiritsy led the unit with 10 tackles on the afternoon.

Norwich kicks off its 2008 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 20, when the Cadets host Husson at Sabine Field. The contest, which will be part of the Homecoming Weekend festivities, is set to get under way at 2 p.m.
