PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University
softball team split a GNAC doubleheader with Johnson & Wales on
Saturday, winning the opener, 10-9 in eight innings, before falling
4-3 in the nightcap.
The Cadets' record moves to 9-5 (5-1 GNAC) with the split, while
Johnson & Wales' record goes to weep, while Emmanuel falls to
2-17 (1-9 GNAC).
Norwich jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener following a
three-run fourth inning. Johnson & Wales responded in the top
of the fifth inning with four runs, cutting the Cadets' lead to
5-4. The Wildcats tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth on
an RBI single by Liana Rivera.
With the score tied 5-5 after seven innings, the game went into
extra innings where JWU used a four-run top of the eighth to take
the 9-5 lead. Norwich bounced back in the bottom of the eighth,
scoring five unearned runs en route to the 10-9 victory.
Jazmin Stevens went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the
NU attack, while Lindsey Fickett was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mackenzie Pratt picked up the win for the Cadets in the circle,
allowing eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in eight
innings of work.
In the nightcap, JWU took an early 3-0 lead as the Wildcats
scored single runs in the first, second and third innings. Norwich
began its comeback effort in the bottom of the third on a RBI
single by Codi Collins. JWU regained its three-run lead with
another run in the top of the fourth. Norwich continued to chip
away, though, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
That was as close as the Cadets would get, however, as Johnson
& Wales held on for the 4-3 victory.
Collins led the Cadets in the second game, going 2-for-3 with an
RBI.
Norwich resumes its conference slate on Sunday, April 6, when
the Cadets travel to Boston to take on GNAC rival Suffolk for a
pair of games.
