Baseball: Johnson & Wales Sweeps Doubleheader From Norwich

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University baseball team was swept by Johnson & Wales in a GNAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets lost the first game, 19-7, and fell in the nightcap, 10-6.

In the opener, Johnson & Wales (9-7, 2-0 GNAC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first after a three-run double by Mike Ziman. Norwich (1-9, 0-2 GNAC) responded in the top of the second on a two-run single by Dominic Sorrentino. Johnson & Wales broke the game wide open in the bottom of the second as the Wildcats exploded for 10 runs to take a 14-2 lead into the third inning. The frame was highlighted by a three-run double by Mike Wengzn and a two-run home run by Brad Jackson. The Wildcats never looked back en route to the 19-7 victory.

Wengzn went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI for Johnson & Wales, while Jackson was 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI for JWU. Kory Delehanty paced Norwich, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Johnson & Wales took an early lead in the second game of the afternoon as the Wildcats scored four times in the first inning. Mike MacKay's two-run double highlighted the frame. JWU scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to move ahead 9-1. The Wildcats added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, and they held on for the 10-6 victory.

Delehanty again led the NU offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The freshman smacked his first career home run in the losing effort.

The Cadets return to action on Sunday, March 30, when they travel to Boston to take on GNAC rival Suffolk in a conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
