NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Ally Daniels scored a
team-high 16 points, and Jess Jaggars recorded a double-double with
10 points and 15 rebounds as the Norwich women's basketball team
defeated Lasell, 63-46, in a GNAC contest played Thursday night at
Andrews Hall.
Norwich (7-13, 6-3 GNAC) outscored Lasell, 32-13, in the second
half to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a 17-point win. The
Cadets limited the Lasers to just 20.0 percent shooting in the
second half (4-for-20).
Kayleigh Shappy added 11 points for the Cadets, while Erica Rate
chipped in eight points and four assists.
Lasell scored the first basket of the second half to increase
its lead to 35-31 at the 19:29 mark, but Norwich held the Lasers
scoreless over the next 10 minutes to seize control of the game.
The Cadets outscored Lasell, 13-0, during that time to take a 44-35
lead at the 9:54 mark. After the Lasers scored two points at the
9:54 mark, NU ripped off eight straight points to take a commanding
52-37 lead with 7:01 to play. The Cadets increased their lead to as
many as 19 points down the stretch as they coasted to the victory.
Lasell (4-16, 2-7 GNAC) actually had control early in the game,
jumping out to a 21-12 lead midway through the first half. Norwich
responded by scoring nine unanswered points to tie the contest at
21-21 at the 8:22 mark. Shappy scored seven of the Cadets' nine
points during the surge as the senior began the run with two free
throws and capped it with a fast break lay-up.
Six straight points by Lasell gave the visitors a 27-21 lead at
the 6:01 mark, and the Lasers held onto the lead throughout the
remainder of the half. Lasell never trailed in opening 20 minutes,
and it took a 33-31 edge into halftime. Carla Zinno netted 13 first
half points to lead all scorers, while Shauna Kelly scored 10
points.
Zinno and Kelly each finished with 16 points apiece, while
Shauntell Jeter added eight points off the bench.
Norwich scored 23 points off 23 Lasell turnovers. The Cadets
held a 42-37 rebounding edge. Nine different NU players scored on
the night.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Cadets
travel to Nashua, N.H., to take on GNAC rival Daniel Webster.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
