NEWTON, Mass. - Jaime Crawford led four Lasers
in double-figures with a game-high 26 points as Lasell defeated
Norwich, 78-66, in a GNAC men's basketball tournament quarterfinal
game Tuesday evening. Jose Guitian added 19 points, and Dwayne
Powell and Corey Godfrey chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, to
help propel the Lasers into the GNAC semifinals.
Jaren Jeffcoat led four Norwich players in double-figures with a
team-high 16 points. Jermaine Lattimore added a career-high 12
points for the Cadets, who finish their 2007-08 season with a final
record of 12-13. Derrick Montiero recorded his second double-double
of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Mike Filipek
chipped in 10 points and seven boards. Tim Fico and Jerrold
Williams netted nine and eight points, respectively.
The Cadets, who only shot 41.8 percent from the floor, stayed in
the game thanks to a 42-27 rebounding edge. NU ripped down 21
offensive caroms, leading to 20 second-chance points.
Lasell shot a red-hot 60.0 percent from the field in the first
half as they took a 46-35 halftime lead. Norwich played the Lasers
relatively even in the second half, but the Cadets could not
overcome their first half deficit.
Norwich jumped out to an 8-4 lead just three minutes into the
game, but a 17-6 run by Lasell gave the Lasers a 21-10 lead at the
10:48 mark. The Cadets bounced back with a quick 9-3 spurt to pull
to within five points at 24-19 with 8:15 to play, but Lasell used a
16-6 burst over the next five minutes to open up its largest lead
of the half at 40-25 with just 3:38 showing on the first half
clock, and the Lasers carried a 46-35 lead into halftime.
Norwich outscored Lasell 15-9 to start the second stanza,
pulling to within five points at 55-50 with 13:53 to play. The
Lasers answered the Cadets run with a 16-4 spurt to establish a
71-54 lead at the 7:20 mark, and their advantage never dipped below
10 the rest of the way.
Lasell (18-8) moves on to the GNAC semifinals, where the Lasers
will go up against No. 3 seed Emmanuel.
