SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Norwich University
men's ice hockey team broke out of its four-game winless streak
with a 7-0 victory over Saint Michael's College Tuesday evening at
Cairns Arena. The Cadets broke open a tight 1-0 game with six goals
in a span of 4:57 late in the third period.
Norwich (3-2-2, 3-1-1 ECAC East) outshot Saint Michael's (1-5-0,
0-5-0 ECAC East), 30-11, through two periods, but the Cadets only
led 1-0 as they headed to the final 20 minutes. The Purple Knights
continued to limit Norwich until the Cadets finally broke out with
six goals in the latter stages of the final frame.
For Norwich, Steve Coon tallied two goals, while Chad Anderson,
Jim Koehler, Emmond Bell, D.J. Fimiani, and Nick DelGallo all found
the back of the net for the Cadets in the win. In net for the
Cadets, junior Ryan Klingensmith had 15 saves.
After a scoreless first period, the Cadets got on the board 3:49
into the second period when Coon scored his first goal of the
season on the man-advantage, which came from Fimiani and Rico
Piatelli. Norwich added its second goal of the game, 12:06 into the
third period when Koehler notched his first score of the season,
coming from C.J. Viso and Ryan Oliver. The Cadets wasted only 15
seconds to add their second goal of the period when Bell netted his
second of the season, with the assists coming from Tim Houston and
Eric Tallent. Billy Kasper and Greg Eskedjian then found Anderson
for his fourth goal of the season, making that the Cadets' third
goal in 49 seconds.
Norwich continued to apply the pressure throughout the rest of
the third period, scoring three more goals to cap its six-goal
period. Fimiani, on the 5-on-3 advantage, scored his third goal of
the season, which came from Tallent and Nikita Kashirsky. On
another power play, this time with a one-man advantage, DelGallo
netted his third of the season, coming from Anderson and Viso. With
2:57 left in regulation, Shawn Baker and Koehler found Coon for his
second goal of the game.
Norwich outshot Saint Michael's, 47-15, for the game. The Cadets
went 4-for-9 on the power play, while the Purple Knights went
0-for-4.
Saint Michael's goaltender Tyler Bilton recorded 40 saves in the
loss.
The Cadets return to action on Jan. 2-3, when the Cadets host
the Times Argus Invitational at Kreitzberg Arena. Elmira will face
Gustavus Adolphus in the first game at 4 p.m., and Norwich will
take on Neumann in the second game at 7 p.m. The second day of the
tournament will feature a consolation game (4 p.m.) and a
championship game (7 p.m.). All four games of the tournament will
