Women's Ice Hockey: Norwich Nips New England College, 2-1

Box Score

HENNIKER, N.H. - Julie Fortier scored twice, and Chiara Traversa played well in the Cadet goal to help the Norwich University women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over New England College in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon.

It marked the first win of the season for the Cadets, who improve to 1-3-0 (1-1-0 ECAC East). The Pilgims, meanwhile, dip to 1-3-0 (1-1-0 ECAC East).

Norwich came out on fire, ripping 15 shots on goal in the first period to 10 for NEC. Neither team could find the back of the net, however, as the game was scoreless after the opening 20 minutes.

The teams continue to battle evenly throughout much of the second period before Fortier scored a wrap-around on the power play. Sophie Leclerc and Amanda Wilks were credited with assists on the goal, which put the Cadets on top 1-0 with 7:47 to play in the second period.

The Pilgrims tied the game early in the third period as Stefanie Lewis scored off an assists from Samantha Phillips and Allison Roy at 1:03 of the period.

Norwich scored what proved to be the game-winning goal about two minutes later as Fortier scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Leclerc and Wilks again earned assists on the marker, which games the Cadets a 2-1 lead. Norwich held NEC to just five shots in the third period, as the Cadets' defense stood tall.

Traversa finished with 25 saves in the NU goal en route to picking up her first career victory.

Norwich outshot NEC, 46-26. The Cadets were 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Pilgrims went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.

Norwich opens its 2008-09 home schedule on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Cadets host ECAC East rival Plymouth State University at Kreitzberg Arena. Faceoff for the Cadets' home opener is slated for 7 p.m.
