MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Nick DelGallo, D.J. Fimiani
and Chad Anderson all scored shootout goals, and Ryan Klingensmith
stopped each of the three shots that he faced in the shootout to
propel the Norwich University men's ice hockey team past
Plattsburgh State Friday afternoon in the first round of the
Primelink Great Northern Shootout at Chip Kenyon Arena.
The Cadets will face the winner of the Middlebury-St. Thomas
game in Saturday's championship at 7 p.m.
Plattsburgh State scored twice in the final 6:52 of regulation
to tie the game at 3-3, and the result will officially go into the
books as a 3-3 draw. In order to determine who would advance to the
Primelink Shootout championship game, the teams competed in a
shootout, and the Cadets dominated. DelGallo, Fimiani and Anderson
all scored in succession, and Klingensmith came up with some huge
saves in the Norwich goal to help the Cadets advance.
Norwich (2-0-1) got on the scoreboard first when sophomore
forward Chad Anderson scored a power play goal at 14:58 of the
first period. The goal, Anderson's third of the season, was
assisted by freshman defenseman Shawn Baker and sophomore forward
Nick DelGallo. Baker started the play when he blasted a shot wide
from the blue line. The puck caromed off the boards directly to
DelGallo, who fed it out front to Anderson, who beat Plattsburgh
State goaltender Bryan Hince.
Jim Koehler had a golden opportunity to double the Cadets' lead
in the closing seconds of the first period when the senior forward
broke in all alone on Hince. His shot clanged off the pipe, though,
and the score remained 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Plattsburgh State (6-0-2) had its fair share of chances in the
first period as well, but the Cardinals were unable to cash in on
two power play opportunities. Plattsburgh State held a 6-5 edge in
shots on goal during the first period.
The Cadets made it 2-0 at 8:19 of the second period when senior
forward Rico Piatelli took a long up-ice pass from senior forward
Nikita Kashirsky and skated in on the right side before firing a
laser of a shot past Hince. Junior defenseman Steve Coon was also
given an assist on the play, as he cleared the puck out of the
Norwich zone and to Kashirsky.
Plattsburgh State sliced its deficit to 2-1 later in the second
period when Vick Schlueter scored at 12:05 off a scramble in front
of the Norwich net. Klingensmith stopped the initial shot, but
Schlueter was able to pound home the rebound to bring the Cardinals
to within one goal. Kyle Kudroch and Corey John assisted on the
goal.
Norwich recaptured its two-goal advantage at 16:10 of the second
period when sophomore forward Roman Krivda cashed in on a pretty
three-on-two play for his first goal of the season. Freshman
forward Tim Houston carried the puck over the blue line, before
quickly feed fellow freshman Emmond Bell on the right side. Bell
held the puck on his stick until Hince committed to him. Then, at
the last possible instant, Bell slid the puck over to Krivda, who
snapped it into the gaping net to make it 3-1 in favor of the
Cadets.
Plattsburgh State outshot Norwich, 11-10, in the second period,
and the Cardinals held a 17-15 edge in that category following the
second stanza.
Plattsburgh State cut the Norwich lead to 3-2 at 13:08 of the
third period when Andrew Willock scored a power play goal off
assists from Dylan Clarke and Eric Satim. The Cardinals then tied
the score at 3-3 with just 2:50 to play when Phil Farrow scored on
the power play. Riley Hill and Joey Wilson earned assists on the
goal.
The Cadets return to action on Saturday, Nov. 29, when they face
the winner of the Middlebury-St. Thomas game in the Primelink Great
Northern Shootout championship game. Faceoff from Middlebury's Chip
Kenyon Arena is slated for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on the
radio at WDEV (550 AM; 96.1 FM) and on the internet at
