MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Ally Daniels and Tara
Stevenson tied for team-high honors with 13 points apiece, leading
the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 79-70 victory
over Middlebury Tuesday evening.
Jess Jaggars added 12 points for the Cadets, who overcame a
14-point first-half deficit en route to the victory. Karissa Doyon
chipped in 11 points, while Christine Daniels scored 10.
Norwich shot a blistering 56.3 percent from the floor in the
second half, outscoring the Panthers, 48-37, in the second stanza.
Norwich used a 14-3 run midway through the second half, turning a
57-54 deficit at the 11:57 mark into a 68-60 lead with 5:29 to
play. NU never let its lead dip below four points the rest of the
way, as the Cadets hit their free throws down the stretch to ice
the win.
The game went back and forth over the first five minutes of
play, with Middlebury holding an 8-7 lead at the 15:01 mark. The
Panthers began to assume control of the contest over the next eight
minutes, building a 28-14 advantage at the 7:19 mark. The Cadets
responded by ending the first half on a 17-5 spurt to close the
Middlebury lead to just two points at 33-31 at the intermission.
Norwich scored the first basket of the second half to tie the
score at 33-33, and neither team led by more than four points until
the Cadets' scoring burst that sparked the victory.
Middlebury (3-3) outrebounded Norwich, 40-35, in the game. The
Panthers turned the ball over 26 times, compared to just 14 miscues
for the Cadets.
Middlebury was led by Allison Needham, who scored a game-high 14
points. Alison Wells chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds off
the bench for the Panthers.
Norwich breaks from competition this weekend for the
Thanksgiving holiday, but the Cadets will return to action the
weekend of Dec. 5-6, when they host the Ed Hockenbury Tournament at
Andrews Hall. NU will face Maine-Machias in the first round of the
event on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. The Cadets will then tangle with
either St. Lawrence or Maine Maritime in the second round on
Saturday Dec. 6.
