NORTHFIELD, Vt. - D.J. Fimiani scored two goals
and added an assist, and Nikita Kashirsky scored once and dished
out three assists as the Norwich University men's ice hockey team
skated to a 6-3 victory over Salem State Saturday afternoon at
Kreitzberg Arena.
Salem State (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) opened the scoring at 6:07
of the first period when Justin Fox scored a power play goal off an
assist from Brett Noll. Noll came in on the left side and fired a
shot that was saved by Norwich goaltender Ryan Klingensmith. The
rebound caromed right to Fox, though, who beat Klingensmith to put
the Vikings on top, 1-0.
Norwich (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC East) tied the score just 1:09 later
when Emmond Bell scored an unassisted goal at 7:16. Bell picked up
the puck near center ice and skated to the top of the left-hand
faceoff circle before blasting a rocket of a shot past Salem State
goaltender Ryan Hatch, tying the score at 1-1.
Fimiani both of his goals during a span 1:59 late in
the opening period to give the Cadets a 3-1 lead following 20
minutes. Both of Fimiani's goals, which came at 15:06 and 17:05,
were set up beautifully by Kashirsky. Fimiani's second marker was
the result of a perfectly executed two-on-one break. Kashirsky took
the puck down the left side of the zone before sliding it over to
Fimiani, who directed it into the gaping net. Rico Piatelli was
credited with assists on both of Fimiani's goals as well.
The second period was a wild one, with four goals scored in a
span of 4:55 midway through the frame. Salem State kick-started the
scoring outburst at 7:41 of the period when Alex Molnar scored off
an assists from Jeff Tellier and Justin Fox to trim the Vikings'
deficit to 3-2. Just 23 seconds later, Norwich regained its
two-goal lead when Chad Anderson blasted a shot that just snuck
underneath the crossbar. The goal was assisted by Nick DelGallo and
Greg Eskedjian.
Only 56 seconds later, with Norwich killing a penalty, Norwich
went up 5-2 when Kashirsky stole the puck from Hatch behind the
Salem State goal and fed it out in front to Piatelli who scored.
Salem State capped the crazy period when Colin Young scored a power
play goal during a five-on-three advantage at 12:36 of the second.
Fox and Nick Jillson were credited with assists on the play.
Norwich scored the only goal of the third period when Kashirsky
netted a power play goal off assists from Fimiani and Eric Tallent
at 8:45 of the period.
Norwich outshot Salem State, 34-26, in the game.
Klingensmith stopped 23 of the 26 shots that he faced en route
to his second straight win. Hatch made 28 saves in the loss.
The Cadets return to action next weekend (Nov. 28-29) when they
travel to Middlebury, Vt., to participate in the Primelink Great
Northern Shootout. Norwich will face off against Plattsburgh State
on Friday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m., before taking on either Middlebury
or St. Thomas on Saturday. All four games of the tournament can be
heard live on the radio at WDEV (550 AM; 96.1 FM) and on the
