NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Seven different Cadets scored
goals, including a pair of newcomers, as the Norwich University
men's ice hockey team defeated Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, in an
exhibition game Saturday evening in front of more than 1,500
spectators at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich opened the scoring in the early stages of the first
period as senior Rico Piatelli scored off an assist from Nikita
Kashirsky at 5:06 mark. The Cadets made it 2-0 at the 12:35 mark
when freshman Ryan Oliver picked up a Southern New Hampshire
turnover and beat Penmen goaltender Shane Brooks on a pretty play.
Norwich had to kill three penalties in the opening period,
including a five-minute major. Each team fired six shots on goal
during the initial 20 minute frame.
The Cadets' offense caught fire in the second period, erupting
for five goals in the middle frame.
Freshman Shawn Baker started the outburst, scoring a power play
goal off a great feed from Piatelli at the 3:05 mark. Senior Jim
Kohler made it 4-0 in favor of the Cadets less than three minutes
later when he tallied a four-on-four goal off assists from senior
C.J. Viso and junior Eric Tallent at the 5:30 mark.
Following a Southern New Hampshire goal, Norwich closed out the
period with goals from sophomore Nick DelGallo and Tallent.
DelGallo's goal was assisted by sophomore Chad Anderson and
freshman Tim Houston, while Tallent's marker was assisted by
Piatelli and Kashirsky.
Norwich completely dominated the second period, outshooting
Southern New Hampshire 16-7. As a result, the Cadets led 6-1 after
two periods of play.
After Southern New Hampshire cut NU's lead to 6-2 with 4:23 to
play in the third, Norwich junior Craig Serino scored on a tip shot
24 seconds later to account for the final margin. Serino's goal was
assisted by freshman Steve Coon and Anderson.
Juniors David Thompson and Ryan Klingensmith split time in the
Norwich net, with each goaltender allowing one goal. Thompson made
nine save on the night, while Klingensmith stopped eight shots.
The Cadets officially open their 2008-09 campaign next weekend
(Nov. 21-22) when they host ECAC East rivals Southern Maine and
Salem State at Kreitzberg Arena. Both games can be heard live on
