Men's Ice Hockey: Norwich Blasts Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, In Exhibition Game

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Seven different Cadets scored goals, including a pair of newcomers, as the Norwich University men's ice hockey team defeated Southern New Hampshire, 7-2, in an exhibition game Saturday evening in front of more than 1,500 spectators at Kreitzberg Arena.

Norwich opened the scoring in the early stages of the first period as senior Rico Piatelli scored off an assist from Nikita Kashirsky at 5:06 mark. The Cadets made it 2-0 at the 12:35 mark when freshman Ryan Oliver picked up a Southern New Hampshire turnover and beat Penmen goaltender Shane Brooks on a pretty play.

Norwich had to kill three penalties in the opening period, including a five-minute major. Each team fired six shots on goal during the initial 20 minute frame.

The Cadets' offense caught fire in the second period, erupting for five goals in the middle frame.

Freshman Shawn Baker started the outburst, scoring a power play goal off a great feed from Piatelli at the 3:05 mark. Senior Jim Kohler made it 4-0 in favor of the Cadets less than three minutes later when he tallied a four-on-four goal off assists from senior C.J. Viso and junior Eric Tallent at the 5:30 mark.

Following a Southern New Hampshire goal, Norwich closed out the period with goals from sophomore Nick DelGallo and Tallent. DelGallo's goal was assisted by sophomore Chad Anderson and freshman Tim Houston, while Tallent's marker was assisted by Piatelli and Kashirsky.

Norwich completely dominated the second period, outshooting Southern New Hampshire 16-7. As a result, the Cadets led 6-1 after two periods of play.

After Southern New Hampshire cut NU's lead to 6-2 with 4:23 to play in the third, Norwich junior Craig Serino scored on a tip shot 24 seconds later to account for the final margin. Serino's goal was assisted by freshman Steve Coon and Anderson.

Juniors David Thompson and Ryan Klingensmith split time in the Norwich net, with each goaltender allowing one goal. Thompson made nine save on the night, while Klingensmith stopped eight shots.

The Cadets officially open their 2008-09 campaign next weekend (Nov. 21-22) when they host ECAC East rivals Southern Maine and Salem State at Kreitzberg Arena. Both games can be heard live on the radio at WDEV (550 AM; 96.1 FM) and on the internet at cadetsradio.com. Live videostream coverage provided by CadetsVision will be available for both games as well.
