UTICA, N.Y. - Andrea Maxon scored the
game-winning goal with just 25 seconds remaining in the third
period to lift Utica past Norwich in a non-conference women's ice
hockey game Saturday evening.
The Cadets (0-1) jumped on top of the Pioneers early in the
first period when freshman Melissa Rundlett scored her first career
goal. The even-strength marker came off assists from fellow
freshman Julie Fortier and sophomore Danielle LaSpina at the 5:16
mark.
Utica (1-0) knotted the score at 1-1 later in the first period
when Meagan Sudik scored a power play goal at the 12:26 mark.
Norwich outshot Utica 14-8 in the opening stanza, which finished
with the score tied at 1-1.
The Pioneers held a 17-3 edge in shots in the second period, but
Norwich sophomore goaltender stopped each attempt to keep the score
locked at 1-1 heading into the third and final frame.
Jessica Leclerc scored a power play goal at 8:36 of the third to
give Utica its first lead of the game. Less than five minutes
later, Norwich junior team captain Sophie Leclerc scored to tie the
game at 2-2. Leclerc's marker was assisted by freshmen Danielle Del
Dotto and Caitie Banfield.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until Maxon scored the game winner
in the final minute, lifting Utica to the victory.
Utica outshot Norwich 36-27 for the game. The Pioneers went
2-for-7 on the power play, while the Cadets were scoreless in eight
power play opportunities.
Fortin, who was the tough-luck loser in the Norwich net,
finished with 33 saves on the night.
Norwich returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 2, when the Cadets
travel to Elmira, N.Y., to face No.2-ranked Elmira College at 2
p.m.
