NORTHFIELD, Vt. - St. John Fisher QB Tim Bailey
threw for 184 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead the
Cardinals to a 45-6 victory over the Norwich Cadets in an Empire 8
football game Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field.
St. John Fisher improves to 4-3 (2-1 Empire 8), while Norwich
falls to 2-5 (0-3 Empire 8). It marked the fifth straight loss for
the Cadets, who have dropped 17 Empire 8 games in a row.
The Cardinals got on the board early in the first quarter when
Ricky Tatar knocked through a 24-yard field goal to make it 3-0 at
the 10:19 mark. Bailey added a one-yard touchdown run later in the
opening stanza to stake St. John Fisher to a 10-0 advantage with
5:17 to play in the first quarter.
Norwich responded on the ensuing kickoff as senior Darnell
Jackson returned the kick 82 yards for a touchdown, drawing the
Cadets to within 10-6 at the 5:06 mark. For Jackson, it marked his
fifth career kick return touchdown.
The Cardinals increased their lead to 17-6 on their next drive,
as Brad Carlton ran for a four-yard score.
St. John Fisher added two more touchdowns in the second quarter
as the Cardinals carried a 31-6 lead into halftime. St. John Fisher
scored another touchdown in the third quarter, and one more in the
fourth to cap the scoring.
Norwich was led offensively by Jackson, who rushed for 94 yards
on 16 carries. Junior Kevin Ober caught 10 passes for 44 yards to
pace the receiving corps.
Senior Richard Cumby set the tone for the Norwich defense,
making seven tackles and two quarterback sacks. Junior E.J.
Flannigan, meanwhile, made a game-high nine tackles and had two
pass breakups.
Norwich is idle next weekend, but the Cadets returns to action
on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y., to tangle
with Empire 8 foe Hartwick. Kickoff for is slated for 2 p.m.
