NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Four different Cadets scored
goals, and sophomore forward Nikki Szczepanski assisted on three of
them as the Norwich University women's soccer team got back on the
winning track with a 4-0 victory over Great Northeast Athletic
Conference foe Pine Manor on Monday afternoon at Howard
Field.
Norwich (11-3, 8-1 GNAC) opened the scoring in the 41st minute
when junior defender Allison Flemming tallied her second goal
of the season off a pass from Szczepanski. Szczepanski did most of
the work on the play, carrying the ball down the right sideline
before flipping it in front of the net to Flemming, who buried it.
The Cadets doubled their lead early in the second half when
sophomore defender Caitlin Wohlschlegel blasted a shot from just
outside the 18-yardline and past Pine Manor goalkeeper Christina
Santos to make it 2-0 at the 47:22 mark.
Senior midfielder Becky Scully made it 3-0 in favor of Norwich
when she converted a nice pass from Szczepanski in the 60th minute.
Szczepanski served the ball from left to right and Scully volleyed
it into the left-hand corner of the goal for her fourth marker of
the season.
Senior defender Leanne Waterman capped the scoring at the 71:48
mark when she headed a Szczepanski corner kick perfectly into the
net to make it 4-0. Once again, Szczepanski's feed was right on the
money, and Waterman was able to capitalize with her first goal of
the year.
Norwich completed dominated the statistics, as the Cadets
outshot the Gators 46-3. NU also held a commanding 11-0 edge in
corner kicks.
Santos kept Pine Manor (3-6-2, 1-6-1 GNAC) within striking
distance for much of the contest by making 18 saves on the day.
Sophomore Nicki Hunsicker and freshman Meghan Kennedy split time
in the NU goal, which each goalkeeper making one save apiece.
"We finally put a full 90 minutes together, and found the
back of the net on four beautiful chances," said Norwich head coach
Tyler Renaud. "Pine Manor played a strong defensive game, and
we were smart in our ball control. Our defense was strong and I was
happy to give a lot of the ladies quality minutes in this
game.
"I think Kacey Abbriano's play in relief of Ally Allen at
sweeper was a great sign for things to come. Dawn McNulty had great
hustle and Nikki Szcepanski did a nice job of controlling the ball
inside of the 18. Ashley Sanford's communication and ball
control in the middle created a lot of opportunities for
us. We certainly have a lot of things to still work on,
but all in all a great response to our loss this past Saturday."
Norwich will continue its five-game homestand on Thursday, Oct.
16, when the Cadets host in-state rival Lyndon State College at
Howard Field. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
