NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Ithaca QB Dan Juvan threw for
237 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bombers to a 41-6 victory
over the Norwich Cadets in an Empire 8 football game Saturday
afternoon at Sabine Field.
Ithaca improves to 4-1 (2-1 Empire 8), while Norwich falls to
2-4 (0-2 Empire 8). It marked the fourth straight loss for the
Cadets, who opened the season with back-to-back victories.
The Bombers got on the board midway through the first quarter
when Juvan hooked up with Thomas Vossler for an eight-yard
touchdown pass. The play capped an impressive 12-play, 80-yard
drive, which used 7:21 off the clock.
Ithaca doubled its lead early in the second quarter when Thomas
Bergerstock rushed for a six-yard touchdown run. With 12:45 to play
in the second quarter, IC led 14-0. Dan Ruggiero ran for a
three-yard touchdown with 4:11 to play before halftime as the
Bombers took a 21-0 edge into the intermission.
Norwich opened the second half with its best drive of the game,
marching the ball 61 yards on 12 plays to score the Cadets' lone
touchdown of the day. Junior RB Kyle Marzeoti capped the drive with
a six-yard touchdown run. NU's extra point attempt was blocked,
however, and the Cadets trailed 21-6 with 10:24 to play in the
third quarter.
Ruggiero added his second touchdown run of the day later in the
third quarter, as the Bombers carried a 28-6 lead into the fourth
quarter. Juvan connected with Kyle Crandall on a 63-yard touchdown
pass midway through the fourth quarter, and the Bombers capped the
scoring later in the stanza when Matt Quinn hit Brian Grastorf with
a 10-yard touchdown pass.
Norwich was led offensively by Marzeoti, who gained 30 yards on
10 carries. Sophomore QB Zach Angelos came into the game late in
the fourth quarter and completed 5-of-6 passes for 39 yards.
Freshman WR Adrian Dantzler led the NU receiving corps with five
receptions for 24 yards.
Junior DB Donovan Brown paced the Cadets' defense with a
game-high 13 tackles. Brown also intercepted a pass, broke up two
other passes and blocked a field goal attempt. Junior DE Reza
Afsarmanesh made 11 tackles, while sophomore LB Rocco DiMeco
recorded 10 stops.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when the Cadets
host Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher at Sabine Field. Kickoff for is
scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
