NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Erica Rate led four Cadets in
double figures with 18 points, and Ally Daniels and Jess Jaggars
each notched double-doubles as the Norwich women's basketball team
defeated visiting Mount Ida, 80-68, in a GNAC game Wednesday
evening at Andrews Hall.
ate hit 6-of-11 field goals, including 5-of-10 from three-point
range to lead the Cadets in scoring for the second straight game.
Daniels, meanwhile, was just four assists shy of registering a
triple-double as the sophomore guard scored 10 points, grabbed a
game-high 11 rebounds and handed out a game-high six assists.
Jaggars added a spark off the bench for Norwich, scoring 10 points
and corralling 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Karissa Doyon chipped in
12 points and eight rebounds.
Norwich (5-11, 4-1 GNAC) began the game on fire, hitting seven
of its first eight field goal attempts and opening up a 16-4 lead
at the 15:58 mark. Rate buried a pair of three-pointers and scored
seven of the Cadets' 16 points during the game-opening surge.
Mount Ida (5-12, 2-3 GNAC) responded with an 8-2 spurt to cut
NU's lead to 18-12 at the 12:41 mark. Four quick points by Jaggars
helped the Cadets increase their lead to 22-12 just moments later,
but four straight Mount Ida points made the score 22-16 with 10:10
to play before halftime. The teams traded baskets over the next
several minutes until Norwich led 29-23 at the 4:30 mark. From
there, the Cadets outscored the Mustangs, 9-2, to end the half and
take a 38-25 lead into the intermission.
Rate led Norwich with 13 points in the opening stanza, while
Christine Daniels and Doyon each chipped in six points apiece.
Norwich maintained a double digit lead throughout the second
half, extending the advantage to as many as 20 points. Twelve
different Cadets scored in the contest as head coach Mark Miller
was able to empty his bench near the end of the second half.
Norwich outrebounded Mount Ida, 45-34.
Elise McLear led four Mount Ida players in double figures with
18 points. Crystal Burgess tallied 16 points for the Mustangs,
while Cherie Parisi chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds, and
Lauren Hickey contributed 10 points.
Norwich takes to the road this weekend, when the Cadets travel
to Boston, Mass., to battle Suffolk in a GNAC matchup. The game is
slated to begin at 1 p.m.
