The Johnson & Wales University softball team split a GNAC
doubleheader with Norwich at Pierce Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Norwich posted a 6-5 win in the opener before Johnson & Wales
rallied for the 10-6 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Cadets took and early lead in the top of
the third when a three-run triple by Whitney Grennon gave the
visiting Cadets the 5-0 lead. Johnson & Wales chipped away at
the lead and trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. An
RBI double by Amanda Lothrop cut the lead to 6-5, but that
was as close as the Wildcats would get as Norwich held on
for the victory. Allison Weber went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI
in the victory for Norwich.
In the nightcap, JWU trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the
sixth before they put five runs on the board, including a two-run
double by Jill Silva and a two run single by Kristyn Lynch to take
the 10-6 victory. Silva went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in
the victory for the Wildcats, while Stephanie Greguoli also notched
a pair of hits in the win. Christine Carroll was 2-for-3 with a run
and three RBI in the setback for Norwich.
With the split Norwich is 15-15 and 10-12 in the GNAC, while
Johnson & Wales goes to 10-25 overall and 7-15 in league play.
The Cadets have landed the seventh seed in the GNAC tournament.
Norwich will face sixth-seed St. Joseph-Conn. in West Hartford,
Conn.
