OSWEGO, N.Y. - Oswego State scored three first
period goals and held on for a 3-0 win over Norwich in the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. The Lakers
improve to 21-3-3 and advance to next weekend's NCAA Division III
Frozen Four in Superior, Wisc. Norwich closes out the 2006-07
season with an overall mark of 20-8-0.
Oswego State wasted no time as they scored the game's first
goal two minutes into the opening period off the stick of Neil
Musslewhite. Brad Dormiedy and Derrell Levy combined for the assist
and Oswego took the 1-0 lead.
The Lakers lit the lamp on a power-play goal midway through the
period as Brendan McLaughlin logged his 24th goal of the season.
Ryan Koresky and Tyler Lyon assisted and Oswego was up 2-0. The
Lakers followed with another power-play goal at the 15:25 mark as
Peter Magagna found the back of the net off the assist of
McLaughlin and Garren Reisweber. Oswego took the 3-0 lead into the
intermission.
A combined 14 penalties were called between both clubs in the
first 20 minutes of the contest.
The scoreboard remained quiet the rest of the way with each team
recording five shots on goal in the second period. Norwich had an
8-5 advantage in shots on goal in the final period.
The Lakers out shot the Cadets, 24-20. Both teams had 10
power-play opportunities, with Oswego making good twice.
Oswego State netminder Ryan Scott collected 20 saves in the
shutout, while Norwich goaltender David Thompson finished with 21
saves.
