BOSTON - Emmanuel won its 11th Great Northeast
Athletic Conference women's basketball title on Saturday, defeating
Norwich, 63-55, in the title game. Emmanuel's Iman Davis led the
way for the Saints with 20 points, while Norwich's Kayleigh Shappy
led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, including four
three-point baskets.
The top-seeded Saints (27-1) led the second-seeded Cadets (24-3)
by the count of 23-21 at the half but went on to lead by as many as
11 points midway through the second half. The Saints' defense
forced 23 Cadet turnovers and Emmanuel out-rebounded Norwich,
43-38.
Emmanuel forward LaTeisha Johnson hit for 14 points, pulled down
a team-high 8 rebounds, and blocked 3 shots, while freshman forward
Tommia Davis netted 12 points and grabbed 6 boards.
Norwich center Sarah Chap recorded a double-double with 11
points and 14 boards. Chap and Natalie Marchese were named to the
All-Tournament Team for Norwich.
Emmanuel's Iman Davis and Tommia Davis were All-Tournament Team
selections. After shooting an incredible 12 for 14 for the
tournament, the Saints' LaTeisha Johnson was voted the tournament's
Most Valuable Player.
By winning the GNAC title, Emmanuel will receive an automatic
bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Norwich awaits word
on an at-large bid. The national tournament will begin on Friday,
March 2.
