NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Chad Anderson and Rick
Cleaver each scored a pair of goals to lead the Norwich men's ice
hockey team to a 7-1 victory over visiting Wentworth on Saturday
evening at Kreitzberg Arena. Nikita Kashirsky added a goal and
three assists for the Cadets, who have won four straight games.
D.J. Fimiani helped fuel the offensive barrage with a goal and
two assists, while Eric Ouellette handed out three assists of his
own.
Norwich (6-2) netted a pair of power play goals in the first
period to open up a 2-0 lead after the first 20 minutes. Freshman
forward Nick DelGallo opened the scoring for NU, scoring off a
rebound just 1:45 into the contest. Anderson doubled the Cadets'
lead at the 14:16 mark when he cashed in a power play goal of his
own. Kashirsky assisted on both tallies, while Raphael Robitaille
and Phil Sbrocchi also picked up assists.
The Cadets added two more goals in the second period as
Kashirsky found the back of net with an even strength tally at the
6:17 mark, and Cleaver added a short-handed marker at the 13:20
mark. Cleaver's goal was especially unique as the senior forward
was on the goal line and was able to sneak it behind Wentworth
goaltender Matt Buchan.
Wentworth (4-6) got on the board late in the second period when
Matt Koehler slipped the puck past Norwich goalie Ryan Klingensmith
with just 20 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Norwich blew the game wide open in the third period, scoring
three more goals. Anderson got the rally going with a power play
goal at the 11:21 mark. Cleaver and Fimiani added even strength
goals later in the stanza to provide the final margin.
Klingensmith made 18 saves in goal for NU, picking up his first
career win in his first-ever start. Norwich has outscored its
opponents 25-6 during its four-game win streak.
The ending of the game was marred by a plethora of penalties,
and a total of eight players were disqualified following an ugly
fight that broke out at center ice with less than two minutes to
play.
Following a month-long break, Norwich resumes its seven-game
homestand on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4-5, when the Cadets host
the Times Argus Invitational at Kreitzberg Arena. The first game on
Jan. 4 will feature Babson and St. Olaf at 4 p.m., with NU taking
on UMass-Dartmouth at 7 p.m. The third-place game is scheduled for
Jan. 5 at 4 p.m., with the championship game slated to follow at 7
p.m.
All four games of the Times Argus will be available on the radio
(WDEV: AM-550, FM-96.1) or on the internet (http://www.cadetsradio.com/),
with George Commo handling play-by-play duties.
