NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Kristen Lewis and Nikki
Szczepanski each tallied goals and Becky Scully assisted on both
markers to lead the Norwich women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory
over Lasell in a GNAC quarterfinal matchup Saturday afternoon at
Howard Field.
The fourth-seeded Cadets, who improve to 13-4-1 with the
victory, will take on an undetermined opponent in the conference
semifinals on Wednesday. Lasell, meanwhile, finishes its season
with a 10-7-0 overall record.
Lewis opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when she buried home
a rebound. Scully started the play when she took a pass from Sarah
Reuschel and clanged a shot off the crossbar. Reuschel and Scully
were each credited with an assist on the play. Norwich had the
better of the play in the first half, outshooting Lasell, 10-3 in
the first 45 minutes.
Szczepanski made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when she found the
back of the net courtesy of an excellent centering pass from
Scully.
Lasell refused to go down without a fight, netting a goal in the
83rd minute to shave NU's lead to 2-1. That was as close as the
Lasers would get, however, as the Cadets held on for the victory.
Norwich outshot Lasell, 16-11, but the Lasers held a 5-3 edge in
corner kicks.
The Cadets will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 30, when
they will play a GNAC semifinal game against either top-seeded
Emmanuel or No. 8 St. Joseph (Conn.).
