Alex Whitney '08 enters his 13th season as the head coach of the wrestling program in 2024-25.

Whitney saw multiple wrestlers place in the NCAA Northeast Regional competition in 2023-24, while Mason Sprinkel '24 earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.  Sprinkel tied the program record for pins in a single season (26), which also led the country.  Thoren Berg '25 also earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.

The Norwich alum was elevated to head coach in the summer of 2012 after he had served as the team's assistant coach for four seasons from 2008-2011.

During his tenure, Whitney has championed re-establishing the 'Cadet Way' - excelling in all phases of life.  In doing so, success on the mat reached a pinnacle.

Whitney coached Kyle Merritt '24 to an appearance at the NCAA Div. III National Championships, where he finished seventh overall.  Merritt was a NEWCA Div. III Scholar All-American, joining Daniel Curran '23 that year.

He coached national qualifier Jacob Forsman '19 to a second-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at 133 pounds.  He has also developed multiple New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-Conference wrestlers, with several earning spots on the NEWA All-Rookie Team.

Whitney's wrestlers have also excelled in the classroom as multiple Cadets have been named National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Academic All-Americans.  Over 30 additional grapplers have earned NEWA Scholar-Athlete status, and the team has been in the top 10 ranked All-NEWA Academic Teams several times.

Whitney graduated from Norwich University in 2008. He was a four-year member of the Cadet wrestling program, serving as a team captain during his senior season.  During his wrestling career, Whitney racked up 30 wins, including four pins, culminating his career in the 184-pound weight class.

In his youth, Whitney was highly ranked in taekwondo, coming in first in the light-heavy class at the 23rd Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships.

Whitney resides in Northfield with his wife and two children.
