BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Vermont Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2026 on Tuesday, with legendary Mike McShane, longtime head coach of Norwich Men's Ice Hockey, earning induction.
One of the most accomplished coaches in collegiate hockey history, McShane's career at Norwich set the standard for sustained excellence at the NCAA Division III level. During his tenure behind the Cadets' bench, McShane led Norwich to four NCAA National Championships and 12 Frozen Four appearances, establishing the program as a perennial national power.
McShane was recognized 11 times as New England Hockey Conference (NEHC)/ECAC East Coach of the Year and earned the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Ed Jeremiah Award, presented annually to the nation's top coach, on five occasions—a testament to his impact both regionally and nationally.
At Norwich, McShane compiled an extraordinary 498-130-38 record (.776 winning percentage). His overall collegiate coaching résumé, which includes head coaching stops at Norwich, St. Lawrence, and Providence, stands at 742-348-69 (.670), placing him among the winningest coaches in college hockey history.
McShane joins an elite group of Vermont Sports Hall of Fame inductees with Norwich ties, including Guy Gaudreau, Tom Curley,
Ed Hockenbury Sr., Frank Pecora, Lou DiMasi III, George Commo, and
Kyle Dezotell, further cementing Norwich University's longstanding legacy of excellence in Vermont athletics.
