NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team showcased its depth and efficiency, with 11 different goal scorers contributing to a 19-4 victory over Elms College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field.
The win extends Norwich's remarkable run, marking its eighth straight victory while improving to 10-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in GNAC play.
Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) spearheaded the offensive effort with four goals, while
Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) netted a hat trick.Â
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.),
Caitlin Slider (Thetford Center, Vt.), and
Julia Proto (Orange, Conn.) each tallied two goals, with
Julia Gutke (Stockholm, Sweden),
Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.),
Gianna Pesce (Williamstown, Mass.),
Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.),
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.), and
Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) all adding a goal to round out the well-balanced attack.
Fielder was dominant in the draw circle, securing six draw controls to help the Cadets dictate possession. Mustone and Ricker each added two draw controls, while Norwich's defense was suffocating, causing 25 turnovers on the afternoon.Â
Lindsey Parker (Wells, Maine) led the way with four caused turnovers, while
Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.) and
Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) forced three apiece.
Elms struck first, scoring just 37 seconds into the contest, but Norwich responded swiftly. Fielder's unassisted goal sparked a three-goal surge, with Slider and Moriarty finding the back of the net to put the Cadets ahead. The Blazers momentarily cut the lead to 3-2, but Norwich took full control from there.
The Cadets rattled off eight straight goals, dominating the remainder of the first half to build an 11-2 advantage. The Blazers managed to find the net once more before halftime, but Merck answered with a goal in the closing seconds to extend the lead to 12-3 at the break.
Norwich carried its momentum into the second half, as Fielder and Moriarty continued their offensive prowess. The teams traded goals early in the third quarter before the Cadets slammed the door shut with six unanswered goals to close out the game in commanding fashion.
Norwich dominated in nearly every statistical category, outshooting Elms, 41-10, while holding a 29-5 edge in shots on goal. The Cadets controlled the ground ball battle, 31-8, and were clinical in transition, completing 13-of-14 clears while limiting Elms to just 7-of-24.
Buntin and
Sophie Zemianek (St. Albans, Vt.) each dished out three assists to facilitate the high-powered attack, while Merck, Fielder, Mustone, and Moriarty each tallied an assist as well. Zemianek also led the team with four ground balls in a strong two-way performance.
With another dominant performance under their belt, the Cadets turn their attention to a crucial GNAC North Divisional clash at Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday, Apr. 8, at 4:45 p.m. They will then return home on Saturday, Apr. 12, for Senior Day against Anna Maria College at Sabine Field.
