Women's Lacrosse: Cadets surge past Regis for commanding GNAC victory, secure fourth-straight win

WESTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team put together a relentless effort on both ends of the field to power past Regis College, 15-6, on Tuesday evening, securing a decisive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory at Regis Stadium.

Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.) and Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.) led the Cadets' offensive charge, each netting four goals, while Buntin added two assists to finish with a game-high six points.  Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) and Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) chipped in two goals apiece, with Magoon's tallies marking the first of her collegiate career.  Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.), Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.), and Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) also found the back of the net to round out the scoring.

Buntin and Moriarty each tallied two assists, with Mustone and Merck also contributing to the playmaking effort with one assist apiece.  Norwich's offensive efficiency was on full display, as the Cadets capitalized on key opportunities throughout the contest.

Regis opened the game with a strong start, scoring three unanswered goals to take an early 3-1 lead.  However, Norwich responded in dominant fashion, erupting for four straight goals to swing the momentum in their favor.  The Pride briefly cut the deficit to one, but another four-goal surge by the Cadets sent them into halftime with a commanding 9-4 advantage.

After Regis struck first in the second half, Fielder, Magoon, and Buntin responded to push Norwich's lead to 11-6 entering the final quarter.  The Cadets' defense then took over, holding the Pride scoreless in the closing frame while tacking on four more goals to secure the victory.

Norwich's defensive unit played a key role in the win, causing 17 turnovers to stifle Regis' offensive rhythm.  Mustone and Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.) were particularly disruptive, each recording four caused turnovers.  Juneau and Magoon also anchored the ground ball battle, collecting a team-high four pickups apiece.

Fielder led the Cadets in the draw circle, securing four draw controls to help Norwich control possession.  The Cadets won 13 total draws while limiting Regis to 11.

Junior goalkeeper Bailey Manning-Ingala (West Hartford, Conn.) delivered another strong performance in net, earning her fifth win of the season.  Manning-Ingala stood tall between the pipes for all 60 minutes, registering eight saves while allowing just six goals.

Statistically, Norwich controlled the pace of play, outshooting Regis, 35-22, and winning the ground ball battle, 21-11.  The Cadets also excelled in transition, successfully clearing 15 of 16 attempts while holding the Pride to a 15-of-22 mark.

With the win, Norwich continues to build momentum in GNAC play, moving to 2-0 in conference competition while securing their fourth-straight overall victory.  The Cadets will now turn their attention to their next matchup, hosting Simmons University in a rematch of last season's GNAC Play-in Game on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at 4:00 p.m., before welcoming Albertus Magnus College to Sabine Field on Saturday, Mar. 29.
