NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team continued their unbeaten start to the 2025 campaign, flying past Plattsburgh State University, 14-5, in a non-conference clash on Sabine Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.) was deadly on both ends of the field, racking up five points on four goals and one assist to go with three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and three draw controls, with her four goals all coming on a perfect 4-4 mark on free-position shots.Â
Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) supplied three goals and a helper for four points, while
Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) and
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.) both recorded hat tricks with three goals apiece.
Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.),
Julia Gutke (Stockholm, Sweden),
Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.), and
Caitlin Slider (Thetford Center, Vt.) all also tallied points, with Gutke finding the back of the net once while Juneau, Buntin, and Slider contributed assists throughout the day.
Mustone ripped in Norwich's first goal just over a minute into the contest and the Cadets never looked back, piling on another score less than a minute later on a Merck tally before both Moriarty and Mustone struck in the waning minutes.
The Cardinals were able to put one on the board before the first intermission, but Norwich responded with vengeance, scoring six-straight throughout the second quarter, courtesy of Mustone, Moriarty, Gutke, Fielder, and Merck to amass a dominant 10-1 lead with four minutes remaining in the half.
Plattsburgh State found some life after the Cadet rally, logging three consecutive tallies to trim Norwich's lead down to six, but the hosts again had an answer. Moriarty found Fielder for a goal just 30 seconds after the Cardinals' last goal, igniting a 4-0 spurt to claim a double-digit edge.
Norwich halted any potential Plattsburgh State comeback in the third and fourth quarters, allowing just two goals in the closing 30 minutes of action en route to securing the 14-5 victory.
The Cadet defense was vicious, generating 22 caused turnovers, with
Lindsey Parker (Wells, Maine) anchoring the effort with six caused miscues. Juneau and
Sarah Moshrefi (Leesburg, Va.) were also defensive stalwarts, accumulating four and three caused turnovers, respectively.
Bailey Manning-Ingala (West Hartford, Conn.) put together another impressive performance in goal, racking up eight saves in a full 60 minutes between the pipes to earn her second win of the young season.
Cynthia Barnosky paced Plattsburgh State with four points on two goals and two assists with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Norwich will have another brief turnaround, returning to action on Thursday, Feb. 27, for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference clash at Keene State College in Keene, N.H. The Cadets then enjoy a break away from the field until Saturday, Mar. 8, when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at Dean College in Franklin, Mass.
