CANTON, N.Y.- The Norwich University Men's Cross Country team concluded its fall campaign with a strong pack showing at NCAA DIII Mideast Regionals, hosted by St. Lawrence University, finishing twenty-first.
Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Runner of the Year
Seth Varin (Danielson, Conn.) once again led the Cadets, surging steadily through the field to place 74th overall in 27:24.9. Varin climbed 41 spots from the first mile to the finish, using a 5:17 final mile split to secure Norwich's top position. He passed 14 runners between the three-mile and 6.45K marks before closing with one of the fastest final sections in the Cadets' lineup.
Freshman
Shea Parish (Barrington, R.I.) delivered another impressive outing, taking 120th in 28:36.8. Parish made one of the largest mid-race moves on the team, jumping 17 places between the mile and three-mile marks. His final mile split of 5:21 helped solidify his position as Norwich's No. 2 runner on the day.
Junior
Kyle Duffek (Chandler, Ariz) and freshman
Alex Calo (Attleboro, Mass.) finished just two seconds apart, placing 149th (29:57.7) and 150th (29:59.5), respectively. Duffek mounted a steady progression throughout the race with his best surge coming between miles two and three, while Calo closed with a strong final mile to stay within the scoring group.
Matheu Dettenrieder (Tribes Hill, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring five, clocking 30:32.2 for 156th. Dettenrieder moved up three spots between the 955-meter mark and the two-mile split, then held his position through the final stretch to lock in Norwich's team score.
Sophomore
Leo Circosta (Greensboro, Vt.) (31:51.5) and freshman
Logan Whitmarsh (North Yarmouth, Maine) (32:21.9) served as the Cadets' sixth and seventh runners, completing the top-seven displacement and contributing key spread compression.
Norwich Leaders
The Cadets conclude their season as GNAC Runners Up, with Varin taking home Runner of the Year plaudits, to got along with All-Conference recognition for Parish, Whitmarsh and
Landon Pandolph (Peru, N.Y.).
