Women's Lacrosse: Moriarty shatters single-season assist record, Cadets fall to Sharks

BRIGHTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak snapped in a North Divisional bout in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, falling to Simmons University, 18-10, at Daly Field on Saturday afternoon.

Five different Cadets scored, each contributing two goals apiece.  Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.), Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.), Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.), Tori Jarvis (South Windsor, Conn.), and Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) combined for Norwich's offensive output, with Moriarty and Merck also supplying two and one assist, respectively.

Moriarty's two assists in today's contest give her 32 on the season, surpassing the 16-year-old 30-assist mark set by Allison Daniels '09 during the 2008 season.  Moriarty has amassed career 44 assists in three seasons, which ranks within the top five in program history.

The Sharks got out to a swift 3-0 lead in the opening four minutes, but the Cadets found life halfway through the wildly offensive first frame.  Moriarty notched her first goal on a man-down opportunity before the Sharks responded with a pair, but Moriarty and Clark struck back-to-back in less than a minute to whittle the lead down to two.

Simmons got one back before the buzzer and continued to roll behind four-straight tallies despite an answer from Jarvis minutes into the second.

Fielder granted the Cadets some offensive rhythm on a man-up goal to slice the Shark lead in half at halftime, and Merck capitalized on another extra-man chance just 20 seconds into the third stanza to bring Norwich to within four.

However, the Sharks asserted themselves after Merck's goal, rallying for six-straight scores.  Norwich seized momentum to close the game, outscoring Simmons, 5-2, over the final 20 minutes, but the Cadets could not overcome the Sharks' advantage.

The Cadets maintained dominance in draw controls, claiming 20 draws to just 11 for Simmons.  Fielder and Clark paced Norwich with seven and six, respectively, while Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) tallied three.

Norwich will now return home for three in a row, first hosting New England College under the lights on Tuesday, Apr. 9, at 7:00 p.m.  The Cadets will then celebrate nine senior student-athletes on Saturday, Apr. 13, when they host Senior Day against Albertus Magnus College.
