PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team saw its postseason run quelled in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinals, as the #5N Cadets fell to #1S JWU (Providence), 14-4, at SMAC to conclude the 2024 season.
Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.) provided a significant boost to Norwich's offense, proving responsible for three of the visitors' four goals.Â
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) contributed the other tally to round out the offense.
The first period was a colossal battle between the two teams, as the Wildcats assumed control early on back-to-back scores within the opening three minutes. Fielder responded shortly after, racking up her first goal to cut Norwich's lead in half for the end of the frame.
After JWU got one back to kick off the second, Fielder again supplied another unassisted tally to bring Norwich within one, 3-2. The Wildcat offense surged from that point on, however, rattling off six-straight goals stretching into the third period.
Fielder finished her evening by registering her hat trick on a man-down opportunity to halt JWU's run. The Wildcats embarked on another spurt that was again snapped by a Cadet goal halfway through the fourth, this time by Clark. JWU's defense held firm the rest of the way, however, securing the 14-4 victory.
Norwich successfully converted 15 clears and won the battle on draw controls, 12-10, with Clark earning five of those victories. The Norwich defense generated seven JWU turnovers, spurred by
Abigail Kirrane's (Lunnenberg, Mass.) three caused miscues.Â
Julia Proto (Orange, Conn.) led the team in ground balls with three.
The Cadets close the 2024 season with a 10-6 overall record and a 7-4 mark in conference play after having scooped up their first postseason win since 2014 after Thursday's 10-8 thriller at Simmons University.
