Women's Lacrosse: Second-half spurt dooms Cadets at Saint Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine - Despite a strong first-half effort, the Norwich University women's lacrosse team could not overcome a second-half rally to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, dropping a 15-5 North Divisional affair to the Monks on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the SJC Sports Complex.

All five Cadet goals were scored by different players, with Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.), Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.), Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.), Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.), and Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) all finding shots in the back of the net.

After allowing a goal minutes into the contest, the Cadet defense proved successful throughout the opening half, as the Monks logged one more goal before Mustone got the Cadets on the board before the end of the first frame.

Despite Saint Joseph's tacking on two more, the Cadets rallied for a pair of their own, as Clark first found Moriarty before the two reversed roles less than a minute later.  However, the Monks captured momentum before the break, courtesy of a goal with 17 seconds left.

That score set into motion five straight goals for Saint Joseph's to start the second half, which gradually ballooned into a 14-4 lead for the hosts in the fourth stanza.  Merck and Fielder logged their goals throughout the second half, but the Cadets could not find the offense needed to keep up with Saint Joseph's.

Norwich scooped up 30 ground balls, with Clark, Fielder, and Carlie Henning (Dawsonville, Ga.) all securing four apiece.  Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.) anchored the Cadet defense with three caused turnovers, while Clark and Fielder each won three draw controls.

The Cadets will close the regular season on Tuesday, Apr. 23, traveling to Anna Maria College for one final North Division game.  Opening draw control is set for 4:00 p.m.
