NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team put on an electrifying and historic performance in front of a Senior Day crowd at Sabine Field on Saturday afternoon, posting a season-best 24 goals in a 24-1 victory over Albertus Magnus College in a cross-divisional Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt.
13 different Cadets found the back of the nylon, paced by a pair of four-goal performances from
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.) and
Tori Jarvis (South Windsor, Conn.), while
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) also tallied a hat trick with three goals.Â
Sophie Zemianek (St. Albans, Vt.),
Caitlyn Fielder (East Calais, Vt.), and
Julia Proto (Orange, Conn.) supplied multiple goals with two apiece, and eight other Norwich players provided one score each.Â
Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.) and
Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.) each ripped in a goal, while five Cadets recorded their first collegiate goal in the victory, as
Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.),
Lindsey Parker (Wells, Maine),
Sarah Moshrefi (Leesburg, Va.),
Abigail Kirrane (Lunnenberg, Mass.), and
Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine) all rounded out the offensive onslaught.
Norwich wasted no time asserting itself from the get-go, pouring in 11 goals in the first period alone, with six of those coming in the opening five minutes, all courtesy of different scorers between Merck, Proto, Clark, Moriarty, Mustone, and Fielder. Jarvis, Merck, Juneau, and Proto finished the first-stanza domination, but back-to-back goals from Jarvis to begin the second frame allowed the Cadets to pick right back up where they left off.
Kirrane and Zemianek threaded the needle to grant the Cadets an 15-0 edge at the half, and eventually ripped in four more in the third before the Falcons finally got on the board in the waning minutes of the quarter.
The fourth again saw an unanswered onslaught by the Cadets, as Parker, Clark, Merck, Moshrefi, and Noble-Lowe all steadily scored throughout the final 15 minutes to solidify the 24-1 victory.
The Cadets were nothing short of unstoppable on Saturday, taking a wholly 52 shots while allowing just three shot opportunities for the Falcons throughout the day. Norwich finished 10-12 on clear attempts while holding Albertus Magnus to just 3-22 on the day.
Norwich's defensive efforts were rampant, generating 26 Falcon miscues, led by Fielder's five and complemented by three apiece from Zemianek, Proto, and
Addison Reil (East Barre, Vt.). Clark, meanwhile, proved victorious in nine draw controls, as the Cadets secured 22 on the day.
The hosts also scooped up 24 ground balls, paced by a trio of Clark, Fielder, and Reil, with the three tallying four apiece.
Noble-Lowe picked up the win in the crease, seeing action between the pipes in the first half and logging a save before ultimately taking the field as an attacker to close the contest.Â
Carlie Henning (Dawsonville, Ga.) also saw action, playing the full second half and allowing just one score.
Norwich's 24 goals are the most in a single game in program history since Apr. 23, 2011, when the Cadets posted that exact number in a 24-5 conference victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine. It also marks the first time this season that the Cadets have crossed the 20-goal plateau.
At halftime, the Cadets honored their nine graduating seniors of the class of 2024, comprised of Juneau,
Julia Gutke (Stockholm, Sweden), Clark, Reil,
Anamika Usman (Milford, N.H.),
Neris Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.),
Eleonore Burns (Weston, Conn.), Henning, and Noble-Lowe.
The Cadets, now winners of two-straight, will look ahead to a seismic GNAC showdown against Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday, Apr. 17. The Chargers, who sit undefeated in North Divisional play in the GNAC, will battle the Cadets on Sabine Field at 4:00 p.m.
