Women's Swimming & Diving: Laitala, Tschida clinch victories in intrastate meet with Saint Michael's

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's swimming & diving team saw dual meet action in Goodyear Pool for the final time this calendar year, hosting intrastate rival Saint Michael's College, on Sunday morning.

The Purple Knights earned a 205-86 victory over the Cadets, despite numerous strong efforts by Norwich throughout the day.

Two Cadets posted solo wins, as Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) captured a pair of 1 meter diving competitions, first toppling Ashley Silveira with a 207.75 score before again surpassing Silveira on 153.50 in one of the day's final events.

Immediately after Laitala's first win, Jenna Tschida (Goffstown, N.H.) gave Norwich another individual win, touching the wall in 58.41 in the 100 freestyle, outpacing Katie Dzambo by nine milliseconds.

Norwich consistently posted impressive showings throughout the day, first finishing second in the 200 medley relay to kickstart the day.  Kylie Farris (Leander, Texas), Brandy Lewis (Strafford, Vt.), Maria Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.), and Alannah Kelliher (Middleboro, Mass.) tallied a 2:03.81 effort in the event.

Lewis and Tschida each had runner-up performances during the meet, with Lewis logging 2:08.14 and 5:42.58 times in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, respectively.  Before her victory in the 100 freestyle, Tschida took to the pool for the 50 freestyle, checking in at 26.20 in the 50 freestyle, just .28 milliseconds behind first-place.

The 200 freestyle relay team also registered a second-place showing, as Lewis and Tschida teamed with Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.) and Kaylin Creel (Huntersville, N.C.) to tally a 1:49.03 time.  Of note in the 200 freestyle relay was the debut of the diving team comprising a relay squad, as Kai Speredelozzi (South Kingstown, R.I.), Megan Sweeney (Hampden, Maine), Gianna Varady (Highland Park, N.J.), and Laitala took to lane six to the cheerful eruption of the crowd.

LEADERS: The Cadets will hit the road prior to Thanksgiving break, with a select group traveling to the University of Rhode Island for the four-day Harold Anderson Invitational, hosted from Thursday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 24.  The initial day's events will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
