PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Norwich Wrestling team competed in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Sunday hosted by Johnson & Wales University, where they came in sixth in the consolation side of the draw.
To open the competition, the Cadets took on Western New England where they were defeated. The matchup began with
Jabari Pinkney (Jessup, Md.) earning a close decision victory over Nicholas Faraci. After the Bears rattled off six straight victories, Norwich got back on the board with
Simon Taraska (Willowick, Ohio) taking an 8-5 decision over Tyreece Cherival in the 184-pound bout.
Next up was a matchup with Williams in the Consolation Quarterfinals. After Pinkney and
Carver Moyer (Easton, Pa.) earned wins by forfeit, the Ephs took six straight bouts, before
Thoren Berg (Holliston, Mass.) and
Mason Sprinkel (Bel Air, Md.) concluded the match with two consecutive pins.
Following the defeat at the hands of Williams, Norwich would draw Bridgewater State which began with Pinkney earning his third victory, this one by fall. Also earning victories by pin were
Nate Nagel, Will Kisatsky, and
Jonathan Neypes (Columbia, Md.) in addition to Taraska earning a victory by tech fall and two more pins for Berg and Sprinkel.
The final bout was against Rhode Island College, which began with two more wins for Pinkney and Moyer in addition to another pin for Sprinkel and a major decision for Berg. Pinkney's victory was a notable one against RIC's Fred Luchs, earning him a perfect 4-0 record on the day earning him a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Next up for the Cadets, they will travel to Elizabethtown Pa. for the Ken Ober Memorial Tournament on Jan 27. Â
