NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team coasted to a swift 6-0 lead and never looked back as part of a celebratory Senior Day, slashing past Anna Maria College, 19-3, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) duel on Sabine Field on Saturday morning.
A whopping 11 Cadets ripped in shots into the back of the net, spearheaded by hat tricks fromÂ
Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) and
Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.).Â
Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.),
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.),
Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.), and
Julia Proto (Orange, Conn.) all logged two goals each, while
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.),
Molly Flanagan (Lutz, Fla.),
Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine),
Abigail Kirrane (Lunnenberg, Mass.), and
Emma O'Neill (Hamburg, N.Y.) added one apiece.
Etherton kicked off the scoring just minutes into the opening quarter off a free-position attempt, faking out Ashley Sheehan in the crease with a shot to the goalkeeper's right side. The Cadets rolled after that, as Clark and Merck posted back-to-back in a 34-second span before Furchak tallied back-to-back. O'Neill closed out the frame with a score.
Anna Maria got on the board from Alexandria Keith less than a minute into the second quarter, granting the AMCATS some life, but the Cadets quickly shut those hopes down, raking in 11-straight goals over three quarters, with goals from Proto and Moriarty book-ending the run. Keith halted the momentum with the first of two Anna Maria goals in the fourth quarter, but Moriarty and Flanagan answered with two game-ending goals, with O'Neill finding Flanagan for the final score with 42 seconds left.
Norwich cruised offensively, taking 39 shots, scooping up 25 ground balls, and winning 18 draw controls. All three goalkeepers saw action for Norwich, with
Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine.),
Bailey Manning-Ingala, and
Carlie Henning (Dawsonville, Ga.) combining for 12 saves.
The win marks the second in a row for the red-hot Cadets, who have also now claimed four of their last five. Prior to the tilt, Norwich honored its graduating class of seven in Flanagan,
Maggie Doyle (Melrose, Mass.),
Bryana Pena (Brockton, Mass.), Etherton, Drown, O'Neill, and Furchak.
Keith led the AMCATS with two goals, while Juliette Barney added one.
A trip to Lasell University awaits the Cadets on Wednesday, Apr. 12, with a 4:00 p.m. start time scheduled in Newton, Mass.
