Women's Lacrosse: Norwich Earn Right to Host GNAC Quarterfinals, Bishop-Manning Sets Single-Season Mark Saturday

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team defeated Emmanuel 14-9 on Saturday, earning the right to host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinal matchup in the process.

In net Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) made 17 saves on the 26 shots that she faced, becoming the single season leader for saves in a season. She resets the mark after today with 134 saves currently on the season. Breaking the record previously held by Kellie Pickle '11 of 127.

Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) scored four goals in the win while causing a pair of turnovers, and Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) scored three goals and four assists in the game to lead the Cadets with seven points. Emma O'Neill (Hamburg, N.Y.) also had five points, collecting four goals and dishing out a helper.

Norwich opened the contest, scoring 1:04 into the matchup when Emma O'Neill scored off of a pass from Furchak. The Cadets scored 2:40 later when Etherton put her shot off of a free position past the goalkeeper. Furchak then scored one of her own, giving Norwich a 3-0 lead before Deja Srimousksavanh scored for the Saints to cut the deficit to two going into the second quarter.

The Emmanuel offense put together a three-goal run to take the lead, but O'Neill leveled the contest at 4 apiece before the Saints struck back-to-back goals. Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) was able to put a shot into the cage, and the Cadets followed up just over a minute later when Furchak put a free position into the cage, leveling the contest again. Emmanuel took the lead again with a goal from Srimouksavanh, before Etherton scored with seven seconds remaining before halftime, going into the break tied at 7-7.

Jasmin Contreras (Glendale, Calif.) scored the first goal of the second half, 1:18 into the third frame, but the Saints defense was solid and Emmanuel's Chandra Franca scored two goals on free positions as the Saints led 9-8 after three quarters of play.

The Cadets offense and defense worked in sync in the fourth quarter, as Norwich scored six straight goals, while Emmanuel was held off the board in the final quarter.

Norwich (11-4, 9-3 GNAC) will travel to Dean on Wednesday, Apr. 27 for a 3:30 pm matchup in their regular season finale.  The Cadets will host a GNAC Quarterfinal matchup later in the week, at a date and time to be determined. This is the first GNAC tournament game that the Cadets have hosted since 2014 when they hosted Simmons as the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
