Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team's winning streak continued on Saturday afternoon on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium, defeating the St. Joseph (Conn.) 13-12 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
Allison Sturgeon (Monticello, Ind.) scored five times for her five points. Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) and Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) each had a pair of goals and dished out an assist. Emma O'Neill (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career.
After trailing 3-0 early in the first quarter, Etherton put the Cadets on the board with a goal with 6:40 remaining in the opening frame. Norwich followed up with a free position goal from Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.) that pulled the Cadets to within one.
St. Joseph's Jenna Banta scored two goals at the end of the first quarter as they took a 5-2 advantage into the second. Norwich's offense erupted in the third quarter scoring six straight goals, taking an 8-5 lead. The Blue Jays scored with 15 seconds on the clock in the second quarter as they knocked the Cadet lead down to two heading into the half.
After a pair of goals by the Blue Jays to start the second half, evening the score. Sturgeon scored on a free position attempts to regain the lead for the Cadets. Norwich and St. Joseph traded goals back and forth before Sturgeon and O'Neill combined to gain a two-goal lead.
St. Joseph opened up the fourth quarter with a free position goal by Makenzie Dinger, but Norwich scored while down a player when Drown was on the receiving end of a pass from Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) as she scored the game winning goal to go up 13-11. With 36 seconds remaining in the matchup, Dinger scored again for her 52nd goal of the season, tying her for the GNAC lead.
Norwich (6-2, 5-1 GNAC) will visit Castleton on Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 7 pm before traveling to Boston to play Simmons on Saturday, Apr. 9 for a GNAC contest.
