Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team opened the third quarter by allowing four straight goals but the Cadets bounced back rattling 13 un answered goals to take control Saturday against Lasell, in a 20-8 win.
Prior to the contest the Cadets recognized seven seniors. Emma O'Neill (Hamburg, N.Y.), Michaila Furchak (Nyacfk, N.Y.), Rachel Landress (Chelmsford, Mass.), Brittney Poljacik (Woodstock, Vt.), Allison Sturgeon (Monticello, Ind.), Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y), and Ava Durand (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) were recognized for their accomplishments within the women's lacrosse program.
O'Neill scored five goals and dished out an assist for a total of six points in the win, and Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) added another five points, with a pair of assists and three goals. Norwich had eight different players score a goal.
Etherton picked up eight ground balls while Jasmin Contreras (Glendale, Calif.) grabbed five draw controls in the win. Quinn Mustone (Medford, Mass.) had four draw controls and three ground balls, while Landress and Poljacik each had three caused turnovers.
Lasell struck first scoring 5:44 into the contest when Sydney Brady fired a shot into the back of the cage. Norwich responded with a goal by Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) with 5:33 remaining in a low scoring first quarter, Lasell and Norwich traded a goal with each other to go into the second quarter tied at 2-2.
Sturgeon scored 43 seconds into the period starting a string of three straight goals to open the frame. The Lasers then broke up the run with a goal with the player advantage with 6:53 remaining in the half. Furchak then scored back-to-back goals for the Cadets as they took a 7-3 lead. Lasell scored once before the end of the half, to go into the break with the Cadets ahead 7-4.
Early in the third Lasell scored four straight goals to open the half, taking the lead 8-7. Etherton then gave the Cadets a spark to tie the contest at 5:52 remaining in the third as they went on to score 13 unanswered goals as they closed out the contest.
Norwich (9-3, 7-2 GNAC) will be on the road to close out the regular season. Monday, Apr. 18 the Cadets have 4 pm matchup with Saint Joseph's (Maine). They will then visit Elms the following Wednesday, Apr. 20 at 7 pm, before visiting Emmanuel on Saturday, Apr. 23. They will round out the regular season with a 3:30 pm contest at Dean on Wednesday, Apr. 27.
