Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich came out on top in a battle of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents, topping Regis 18-10 at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium Wednesday night.
Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) scored eight points on the evening scoring three goals and registering three assists on the stat sheet, while Allison Sturgeon (Monticello, Ind.) scored five points including four goals. Nine Cadets were attached to the scoresheet as they scored the most goals in a single contest since Apr. 22, 2019 against NVU-Lyndon.
Defensively, Norwich caused 10 turnovers, while collecting 37 ground ball opportunities, led by Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) who collected seven. In net, sophomore Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine) made eight saves as she picked up her first win of the season and her collegiate career.
Regis had two players register a hat trick in the loss as Isabella Beane and Abbie Doheny each scored three goals apiece.
As the two team's began to find their footing, Regis' Doheney got one past the Norwich goalkeeper with 6:34 remaining in the first quarter. Norwich responded three minutes later after Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) found Furchak open in front of the net and Furchak scored. Beane put Regis ahead 2-1 with 1:39 remaining with an unassisted goal to take the lead into the second quarter of play.
Just 1:14 into the second frame, Sturgeon was able to shoot one past Pride goalkeeper Grace Heffernan. Both teams were held scoreless until the 2:16 mark when Jasmine Contreras (Glendale, Calif.) broke through to give Norwich their first lead of the game. Drown and Maggie Doyle (Melrose, Mass.) both scored to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
After a Pride goal by Doheny brought Regis to within two, the Cadets rattled off three straight goals over a span of 2:56, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. Norwich left the third quarter with an 11-5 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams combined for 12 goals, with Norwich outscoring Regis 7-5 in the final period of play, as they secured a 18-10 victory.
With the win Norwich picked up their first victory over Regis, losing the previous two contests that the institutions' women's lacrosse teams played.
Norwich (2-1, 1-0 GNAC) will be off until Saturday, Mar. 19 when they travel to Johnson & Wales for a 2 pm matchup with the Wildcats. Norwich will then host Rivier on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in a 7 pm GNAC tilt.
