Women's Swimming & Diving: Avise claims three individual victories, Cadets split in tri-meet against Babson and Regis

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's swimming & diving team cruised to a win over Regis College but endured a loss to Babson College in an afternoon tri-meet at Goodyear Pool on Saturday afternoon.

Norwich registered a 173-112 victory over the Pride, but posted a nearly identical yet flipped score against the Beavers, falling to Babson, 176-115.

Babson dominated from the start, with the B-team capturing the 200-yard medley relay despite a strong showing by Norwich's A team, which checked in at third behind efforts by Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.), Hannah Shaner (Gilbertsville, Penn.), Nikky Avise (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.), and Jenna Tschida (Goffstown, N.H.).

The Beavers' success would continue, courtesy of four-straight individual wins before Avise gave Norwich its first top-place position in the 100-yard butterfly behind a 1:00.11 time. Babson's Sophia Sznewajs would claim the last individual win before Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) posted an impressive 157.35 score in the 1-meter 5-voluntary diving event.

Avise, the reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Athlete of the Week, would return to the water to edge out Sznewajs by just 19 milliseconds in the 100-yard freestyle before Molly Cox and April Kupsky earned wins for Babson.  Shaner subsequently became Norwich's other first-place finisher, clocking in a 5:51.98 time in the 500-yard freestyle.

Avise would check in again just an event later for the 50-yard butterfly, recording an impressive 26.23 time to close out the Cadets' top spots for the afternoon.

The Cadets will see action again on Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19, traveling to SUNY Potsdam for the North Country Invitational.  Friday's festivities will begin at 4 p.m., while Saturday will start at 10 a.m.  Norwich's tri-meet against Babson and Regis will be the final home meet for the Cadets until Jan. 14's meeting against Colby-Sawyer.
