Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. - A late four-goal surge from the Norwich University women's lacrosse team spoiled the Chargers' season opener as the Cadets scored a 15-13 come-from-behind win over Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday afternoon.
Norwich (2-3, 0-2 GNAC) opened the scoring with the game's first three goals. Senior Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) had two of the three goals for Norwich. After that, the Chargers came back going on a four-goal streak of their own. Both the Chargers and Cadets traded goals until the hosts broke through with under a minute to go. With the score 9-7, Norwich potted one last shot with just 19 clicks remaining in the half as senior Kathryn Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) pulled the Cadets within one heading into halftime.
Colby-Sawyer (0-1) struck first in the second half but was matched with a free-position goal from sophomore Allison Sturgeon (Monticello, Ind.). After the Chargers regained the one-goal lead, the teams once again traded goals, until the score was tied up at 12-12. The Cadets then went on a three-goal run, capped off by a goal by junior Brittney Poljacik (Woodstock, Vt.). Colby-Sawyer battled back to get the game within two with a goal with 58 seconds remaining, but the Cadet defense held the hosts at bay for the win.
Colby-Sawyer outshot the Cadets 34-33 with the Cadets holding the 27-23 advantage in shots on goals. Norwich also held the upper hand in the draw game outworking the Chargers 17-13.
Sophomore Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) led the Cadets with four goals and two assists while Schromm and Sturgeon each contributed a hat trick and two helpers. Preul tacked on two goals and two assists while freshman Jasmin Contreras notched the first multi-goal game of her career with two goals. Schromm continues to move up the program's all-time leaderboard as she moved into fifth place in assists with 29 and now trails Mollie Fitzpatrick '12 by just one.
Freshman Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine) stopped three shots in net for the Cadets in the first half before senior Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) came in relief in the second half to thwart seven shots on goal and pick up the win.
Norwich will host Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Saturday in a rematch of a game played earlier this season. The game time for Saturday is 4 p.m.
