Women's Lacrosse: Cadets Claim First Win of the Season Over Pilgrims

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team unearthed its best offensive performance of the season in a 17-10 non-conference victory over New England College on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field.

Norwich (1-3) picked up its first win of the season in ironic fashion beating NEC (1-3) by the identical score it lost to the Pilgrims exactly one week ago today.

Senior Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) opened the game with a natural hat trick scoring three-straight times to give the Cadets an early 3-0 lead.

NEC battled right back scoring the next three goals to deadlock the game at 3-3 with just under 20 minutes still remaining in the opening half.

The Cadets re-established their three-goal lead at 6-3 after three-unanswered goals from three different players put them up for good. NEC would close the deficit to 6-5 after a pair of free-position goals from Nathalie Antigua and Lauren Rich, but two goals from sophomore Allison Sturgeon (Monticello, Ind.) and junior Brittney Poljacik's (Woodstock, Vt.) second of the season gave the hosts a 10-7 lead at the half.

Norwich outscored the Pilgrims 3-1 in the first half of the second frame to extend its lead to 13-8 following Schromm's sixth goal of the game.

The Cadets then iced the game by scoring the last three goals of the contest. Three different players finished up the scoring with all three goals being assisted by sophomore Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine).

Norwich's defensive unit played disciplined all afternoon limiting NEC's top scorer, who had scored eight goals in the last meeting, to just a single goal.

Grabbing her first career win in net for the Cadets was freshman Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine) who stopped four shots in the first half. Senior Sydney Rocheville (Salem, Mass.) also made four saves in relief during the second half.

Norwich outshot the Pilgrims 46-28 and won the draw battle 16-12.

Schromm exploded for six goals to lead all scorers. Her six draw controls moved her into fifth place in school history with 109. Drown topped all players with a career-high seven points which included a hat trick and four assists. Sturgeon carved out a career-best five points with three goals and a pair of helpers, while senior Kathryn Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also notched a hat trick to go with an assist.

Norwich is scheduled to visit Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, April 7 for a game at 3:30 p.m.
