Women's Lacrosse: Norwich Outlasted by Plattsburgh

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team fell behind in the first half and was unable to mount a comeback as the Cadets dropped a 20-14 decision to Plattsburgh State in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Norwich (0-1) and Plattsburgh (1-0) traded goals back and forth to open the game. The Cardinals' Allie Vangas opened the scoring with her fourth of the season just over a minute after the initial draw.

NU's junior attacker Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) got the home side on the board on a fine individual effort using her speed to gain the edge on her defender opening a window to goal which she took advantage of by beating the Plattsburgh goalie high and right.

After the Cardinals retook the lead on a free-position goal from Lindsay Guzzetta, sophomore attacker Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.) responded with her first of the game, finishing off a pass from Schromm to even the score at 2-2.

Plattsburgh put an end to the back-and-forth by scoring four-straight tallies to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Deja Richardson scored two of the visitors' goals during the run.

Junior midfielder Kathryn Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ended the run with her third goal of the season converting on a free-position shot.

The Cardinals once again were able to string together four-consecutive markers to extend its lead to 10-3 with 9:47 remaining in the opening frame. Frankie Porcaro notched her fourth and fifth of the season to power the visitors during the run.

The Cadets clamped down on defense for the remainder of the half and were able to outscore Plattsburgh 5-1 to close the deficit to 11-8 entering the break.

Some great vision from freshman attacker Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) found open teammates for easy goals during the Cadets' momentum swing. Winstanley and sophomore attacker Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) each potted a pair leading up to halftime.

The Cardinals opened the second half with two goals from Kerri Corcoran and Porcaro to give the visitors a 13-8 lead. The Cadets continued to battle throughout the rest of the game, but Norwich was unable to link together any scoring runs as Plattsburgh often scored two goals for every one the Cadets were able to put home.

Plattsburgh outshot the Cadets 41-29 and used its 22-13 advantage on draw controls to control the clock and possession.

Plattsburgh's Sarah Braji recorded eight stops between the pipes for the visitors to pick up her second win of the season. Senior goalie Lawson Hayes (Maple Shade, N.J.) backstopped the Cadets making 13 saves in the loss.

Winstanley tied for the lead in goals with five in the game which gives her 10 through two games thus far. Furchak recorded the first hat trick of her career to supplement the offense. Pruel and Schromm both netted a pair of goals with Preul leading the team in draw controls and Schromm scooping up a game-high five groundballs. Drown picked up a trio of assists with her vision around the net while Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) scored her first of the season in the second half.

Norwich will head to South Carolina next week during spring break for a pair of games in Hilton Head. The Cadets will face Oneonta on Monday at noon and then square off against Potsdam on Thursday in a game set to start at 10 a.m.
