Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team fell victim to a ferocious comeback by the Sharks of Simmons College on Tuesday night, as the hosting Sharks managed to defeat the Cadets in overtime by a 15-14 final score.
The first half was dead even, as both teams collected eight goals to head into the break at an 8-8 deadlock. Norwich came out on fire in the second half and put up four straight unanswered goals, but Simmons responded with three straight of their own to tighten things up once again. Freshman Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) got the Cadets offense rolling again with an unassisted goal, and senior Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) put one in a few minutes after to give Norwich a 14-11 lead with just over five minutes remaining.
Simmons rallied hard with three straight goals, capped off by a dramatic Mallory Cottam goal with a mere :36 seconds remaining, to erase the Cadets lead and send the game into overtime.
Norwich controlled the opening draw in overtime, but Ana Giarrusso came up with a big defensive play to cause a Norwich turnover, setting up Kingsley Richards to punch in the game-winner with 1:54 remaining in overtime to take home the win for the Sharks.
A heartbreaking loss for Norwich was not without some impressive individual performances. Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) put up five more goals, continuing her impressive junior season. Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) collected four of her own to bring her season total up to 30, the second highest total on the team behind Albretsen's 40. The Cadets held the advantage in shots (30-24) and draw controls (20-11), but the Sharks made just enough of the right plays at the right time to take home the victory.
Next up for the Cadets is a Saturday GNAC showdown with the Lasell College Lasers at Sabine Field, set to start at 4:00 PM.
