Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team was edged by visiting Maine Maritime Academy, 13-12, on Wednesday afternoon at Sabine Field. The Cadets record stands even at 4-4 while the Mariners improve to 3-2 following the non-league tilt.
Sophomore Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) tied a career-high mark with six goals for the Cadets while senior Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) tallied two goals and caused four turnovers in only 30 minutes of action. Freshman Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) joined Guarnieri with two goals and junior Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) scored a goal and recorded two assists.
Norwich's first lead of the game came shortly into the second half as Guarnieri potted her first goal of the game to cap a three-goal run, creating an 8-7 advantage with 22:26 left on the clock. The Cadets allowed four-straight goals, however, including three on free position attempts, to create an insurmountable lead for the visitors.
Ahead by two goals late, a shot attempt by Maine Maritime gave the Cadets hope of tying the game. Guarnieri put home a pass from McGrath with 39 ticks left on the scoreboard and Norwich came up with the ensuing draw control. However, in a rush to get down the field, the Cadets turned the ball over and secured the victory for Maine Maritime.
Junior Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.), making her collegiate debut in goal for Norwich, made three saves in the loss. The Mariners' Sierra James stood tall, turning away 15-of-27 shots that she faced to pick up her third victory of the year in goal.
The Cadets led Maine Maritime in shots taken (38-to-22), ground balls (25-to-15) and draw controls (15-to-11). The Mariners, however, converted seven-of-nine free position attempts as Tori Cooper and Shelby O'Neil rank within the top-15 in NCAA Division III in that statistic – Cooper potted four of her team-leading five goals on free positions.
Norwich, who began its season with eight-straight home games, hits the road for three-straight contests. The Cadets will take on Albertus Magnus this Saturday, Apr. 8 at 12 p.m.
