Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) made a career-high 16 saves for the Norwich University women's lacrosse team in her squad's 19-15 loss to visiting Simmons College.
The Cadets are mired in a three-game losing streak, falling to 6-8 overall and to 2-6 against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foes. Simmons snapped a four-game winless streak with Wednesday's result, improving to 6-10 overall and to 3-5 against league opponents.
Sophomore Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) tied a single-game personal record with seven points, scoring six goals and one assist (6-1=7). Senior Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) and freshman Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) registered three points of offense apiece.
The Cadets built a 3-1 lead in the game's first 5:38 as Albretsen potted two goals and freshman Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) helped to grow the two-goal advantage. Simmons put home four of the game's next five goals, taking a 5-4 lead, before Albretsen scored back-to-back strikes to give her team a 5-4 lead.
Despite three-straight goals from Simmons, Bloom put home a free-position goal with 19 seconds on the first half clock. Only 12 seconds later, Albretsen dramatically tied the game at nine heading into halftime with an unassisted goal. Despite being outshot 23-to-12 in the first 30 minutes of action, the Cadets cashed in with nine goals on those 12 shots.
Guarnieri scored the first goal of the second half, but Simmons answered with three goals, including two from Elena Bragg. The Cadets followed with back-to-back goals as junior Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) scored prior to an Albretsen unassisted goal, knotting the game at 12 with 23:29 left in the second half.
The Simmons offense clicked into gear immediately after Albretsen's game-tying marker, scoring seven of the game's next eight goals to build a 19-13 lead with exactly seven minutes left in regulation time. Guarnieri and junior Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) scored in the final five minutes for Norwich, but the Cadets ended up on the short end of a 19-15 score.
The Sharks outshot Norwich 45-to-23 in the game and also picked up 25 ground balls, limiting the Cadets to only 16. Simmons overwhelmed Norwich on the draw, winning 27 of the game's 35 draw controls – Bragg picked up 11 of those draws while also finishing as her team's leader with five goals and three assists for eight points (5-3=8).
The Cadets also committed 49 fouls in the contest while Simmons was called for only 24 infractions. The 49 fouls by Norwich as a team are far and away a season-high total.
Simmons' Chyenne Yeager moves to 3-8 on the season after making three saves on 18 shots faced.
Norwich concludes its regular season with a 1 p.m. tilt at Rivier University on Saturday, Apr. 29.
