Women's Lacrosse: Norwich Nets 21-4 Victory Over Lyndon State

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) of the Norwich University women's lacrosse team scored six goals and added two assists during Friday's 21-4 victory over Lyndon State College.

The Cadets improve to 2-0 on the young season while Lyndon State posted the loss in its first-ever varsity women's lacrosse game. Norwich entered play as the NCAA Division III leader in scoring offense (23 goals) and now has registered 44 goals across its last two games.

Guarnieri racked up eight total points of offense for the Cadets, setting a personal-best mark in point production. Freshman Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.) also set a career-high with six tallies while sophomore Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) scored four times.

With 96 goals and 17 assists for 113 points (96-17=113) across her four-year career, Guarnieri now holds sole possession of eighth place all-time in Norwich history. Moving into fifth place all-time with 125 career ground balls, she needs only four more goals to reach 100 for her career.

Freshman Jordan Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) scored three times and added an assist while sister Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) scored once. Freshmen Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) and Kathleen Covino (Medford, Mass.) rounded out the point scoring for Norwich with a goal and an assist, respectively.

Defensively, Guarnieri led the way with nine ground balls, eight draw controls and six caused turnovers. McGrath added four caused turnovers and four ground balls while finding success on both of her free-position shot opportunities.

Norwich sprinted out to a 7-0 lead as Albretsen registered a hat trick in the first 5:13 of action. Mikayla Hodge snapped the scoring streak with the first-ever goal scored in Lyndon State history, but the Cadets countered with 11-straight goals to capture an 18-1 advantage only 43 seconds into the second half.

Carmen Mears, who led the Hornets with three goals, scored the last three for the visiting Hornets. Mears also led her team with four draw controls.

The goaltending tandem of sophomore Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) and freshman Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) allowed four goals on nine shots, with the former making one save in the first half and the latter halting four shots in the final 30 minutes. Amanda Hadley made nine saves for Lyndon State against 30 shots.

Norwich hits the road on Wednesday, Mar. 15, taking on Thomas (Me.) College at 4 p.m. The Cadets return home Thursday, Feb. 23, welcoming Colby-Sawyer College for a 6 p.m. tilt at Sabine Field.
