Norwich Falls to Emmanuel in GNAC Action, 21-9

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-9 decision to Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Roberto Clemente Field. Emmanuel senior midfielder Kristen Tuleja (Mansfield, Mass.) set a new single-game scoring record with nine goals. Tuleja also broke the single-game point record, dishing out two assists in the win for 11 total points. The Saints improve to 6-2 overall on the year and 4-0 in GNAC play while the Cadets fall to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC.

The action was close for the first 17 minutes with both teams owning leads early on. Back-to-back Tuleja scores gave Emmanuel a 4-2 cushion before Norwich responded with three straight goals by sophomore attack Teresa Segreti (Salisbury, Mass.), junior middie Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) and freshman middie Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) to take a 5-4 lead with 13:11 to play in the first half.

Over the next six minutes, Emmanuel responded by scoring six unanswered goals to build a 10-5 cushion and take control of the game. Tuleja scored the first and last goals of the run while senior middie Sarah Higgins (Groveland, Mass.) also netted two goals during the streak.

Segreti ended the run with her second goal of the half to cut the lead to 10-6 with 4:18 remaining in the first half before EC junior attack Emily Baker (Stratham, N.H.) answered exactly one minute later to give the Saints an 11-6 lead. Norwich would cap the first half scoring with a man-up score by Albretsen, her fourth goal of the half to account for an 11-7 halftime score.

Emmanuel put the game away with tenacious defense to open the second half, leading to eight unanswered goals and a 19-7 lead following back-to-back Tuleja scores with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation.

Norwich junior middie Erin Gats (Livermore, Maine) netted her first goal of the year to stop the Emmanuel run and make it 19-8 but Tuleja netted her record-breaking ninth goal to bump the lead to 20-8 with 5:16 to play. Tuleja surpasses Logan Carr ('12) who held the single-game scoring record of eight goal which she accomplished twice, last against Rivier University on April 21, 2012.

Higgins would add the final Emmanuel goal with 2:52 to play to make it 21-8 before Guarnieri capped the game's scoring with a man-down goal for the Cadets to make it 21-9 which would be the final.

Higgins ended the afternoon with seven points on four goals and three assists while Baker added six points on four goals and two helpers. Junior Savannah Lundwall (Fiskdale, Mass.) chipped in with four points on three goals and one assist.

Albretson led the way for the Cadets with her four first half goals before EC shut her down in the second half. Guarnieri and Segreti each finished two goals each.

EC senior goalie Lauren White (Lynnfield, Mass.) made nine saves in net for the win. NU freshman goalie Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) made eight saves over 38 minutes of action before being relieved by freshman goalie Danielle Boucher (South Burlington, Mass.) who made three saves over the final 22 minutes.

The Saints return to action on Tuesday, April 12 for a home contest at 7:00 PM vs. Simmons College while Norwich is back on Wednesday, April 13 for a road GNAC tilt at Johnson & Wales University scheduled for 4:00 PM.
